The Spiritual Roots of the Culture Wars

While most Americans realize that Universities and the entertainment industry play a major role in pushing left-wing agendas, the fact is that the origins of the many cultural trends we see today are much more sinister than one might think. A careful reading of the first two chapters of Genesis bears this out. In these passages, we see God miraculously creating the human race and laying the foundation for how individuals should relate to one another.

In the 2nd chapter of Genesis, we read of the intimate way God formed Adam from the dust of the ground and then breathed life into him; Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living [a]being. This passage paints a beautiful word picture that illustrates the depth of God’s love for his human creation. Satan’s envy and hatred of God’s special relationship with human beings has caused him to inspire fallen men to commit murder against each other and to destroy innocent lives through ritualistic child sacrifice and abortion. In contempt of God’s institution of marriage between one man and one woman, he has advanced same-sex marriage through political systems. As to gender, Scripture specifically and unequivocally states that Adam and Eve represented two distinct genders; Genesis 1:27  27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Here, Satan seeks to mock God’s plan for men and women and create disorder in society by introducing the idea of an unlimited number of gender “identities”.

God’s initial instructions for how men and women should interact with each other, as well as how they would relate to the natural world around them, have been undermined by the radical versions of the animal rights agenda along with feminism and environmentalism. While respect and appreciation of women, animals, and the environment are all good things, Satan has used aggressive political activists to carry these ideas to harmful extremes.

From the context, there can be no doubt that the Creator intended the marriage union to include one man and one woman. Genesis 1:28 teaches us that this traditional marriage relationship is the primary plan for how children are produced and parent-child relationships are formed. Also, that the human race is given dominion over the natural world and the animal kingdom; 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that [a]moves on the earth.”

From the planets' orbits to the DNA molecule's mind-boggling intricacies, we know that the Creator is a God of order. We see this same attention to order in the design and interaction God intends for human beings. From the beginning, Satan has been working desperately to undermine these foundational supports of society. Over the past century, he has made significant gains in introducing the same pagan philosophies and lifestyles into Western culture that have been embraced by other cultures throughout history.

Even a casual observer of politics in the Western world could clearly see that the leftist obsessions with abortion, same-sex unions, the trans-gender agenda, and the radical versions of feminism, environmentalism, and animal rights could hardly be a coincidence.

While many see these as strictly political movements, they are deeply and darkly spiritual in nature and draw battle lines that must be approached from a spiritual perspective. Thankfully, God has not left us defenseless in this regard. In the sixth chapter of Ephesians, Paul describes the weapons that are at our disposal as believers: 14 Stand firm therefore, having belted your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having strapped on your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 [g]in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Although the Roman authorities of the day were inflicting physical pain and imprisonment on followers of Christ at the time, Paul reminded the Christians of Ephesus that the real threat they were battling was not political:

12 For our struggle is not against [f]flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

                                                                                                Ephesus 6:12

Americans must wake up to the fact that while we, as citizens, should participate in the political process, we must also vigorously employ our spiritual weapons in the epic, unseen war that currently rages all around us.
